On the 9th August I went to Tanzania to
attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing
mountain in the World and Africa's highest peak at 19340ft (5895m). One of
the so called "Seven Summits" of the World (the seven highest mountains on
the seven continents), it can be seen over 100 miles away in Kenya and
Tanzania. After an acclimatisation climb on Mt Meru 14947ft (4556m), where
there was a chance to see plenty of wildlife, we attempted the "Umbwe"
route, the hardest non-tourist trekking route up Kili. The mountain's
glistening southern glaciers plummet from the summit snowfields, forming an
impressive backdrop as we walked through jungle, tropical meadows, heath moorland, alpine desert and along
the crest of a ridge to the summit cone. After the climb, I went on a three
day safari to chill-out and take in, amongst others, the world famous Ngorongoro Crater. |
