The Climb

On the 9th August I went to Tanzania to attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain in the World and Africa's highest peak at 19340ft (5895m). One of the so called "Seven Summits" of the World (the seven highest mountains on the seven continents), it can be seen over 100 miles away in Kenya and Tanzania. After an acclimatisation climb on Mt Meru 14947ft (4556m), where there was a chance to see plenty of wildlife, we attempted the "Umbwe" route, the hardest non-tourist trekking route up Kili. The mountain's glistening southern glaciers plummet from the summit snowfields, forming an impressive backdrop as we walked through jungle, tropical meadows, heath moorland, alpine desert and along the crest of a ridge to the summit cone. After the climb, I went on a three day safari to chill-out and take in, amongst others, the world famous Ngorongoro Crater.

The Company

I decided to go with Jagged Globe as they are just a Mountaineering company and nothing else. They're certainly not cheap, but they're the best. Established in 1987, Jagged Globe is a world-leader in providing mountaineering expeditions and courses. Jagged Globe built its reputation as an early pioneer of professionally run 8,000m peak expeditions. In 1993, they were the first British company to lead clients to the summit of Everest and, even now, are one of the few organisations to have led people to the top from the North and South sides of the mountain. In 1995, they became the first to lead successful expeditions to all Seven of the Continental Summits. They have more experience than any other UK company, and because of this, have a very good track record of successful summit attempts.

The Charity

At first, I had no intention of doing the climb for charity as was is so soon after my last Everest Trek, but as so many people have offered to sponsor me, I decided to collect donations on behalf of Christian Aid. Thanks to so many peoples generosity I've been able to send cheques to Christian Aid totalling £1010 - amazing, eh! So a BIG  thanks goes out to everyone who contributed. However, it's still not too late to add to the total. If you'd like to give something, just let me know by emailing me on the address below. Thanks for your support, it's very much appreciated.
