So what's ChildHope all about?

Website: www.ChildHopeuk.org

ChildHope is an international non government organisation (NGO) dedicated to improving the lives and defending the rights of street children world-wide. ChildHope work in partnership with local organisations by providing resources, information, support and training.

ChildHope was originally established in 1986 as an international foundation to act as a voice on behalf of street children. It was brought into being by a number of leading world wide organisations including Unicef, the World Council of Churches and Save the Children (Sweden) and since becoming an independent NGO in 1990, it still retains links to some of the other independent ChildHopes such as ChildHope Asia Philippines and ChildHope Brasil.

Childhope currently supports 11 street children projects in South Africa, Kenya, Brazil, Peru, Romania, Bulgaria, Ethiopia,Tanzania, Nepal, Bangladesh and Macedonia.

ChildHope manages a regional capacity building programme in Eastern Europe through which it provides institutional strengthening support and technical advice to several other organisations working with street children. ChildHope is continually looking for new and innovative ways to empower street and marginalised children and is supporting shared South to South learning for groups working on issues relating to street children. ChildHope is a founding member of the Consortium for Street Children in the UK and the European Network on Street Children World-wide.

ChildHope aims to increase the capacity of each of its partner organisations to respond directly to the needs of the street children from their communities and to strengthen these communities. Through the projects ChildHope supports, on average, 1000 children a day receive basic assistance in terms of food, shelter and clothing and in addition, long term support through educational services, legal advice and protection, family reunification, skills training and rights training.

The projects aim to create the opportunities for children to get off the streets and rebuild their lives by enabling them to go back to school, to learn skills from which they can earn a living and to be reunited with their families where appropriate. Indirectly many other vulnerable children are empowered through these programmes. ChildHope is constantly striving to raise awareness about street children's rights throughout the world.
