MATCH REPORT

After going one goal down in the first half thanks to a cracking goal from a free kick by Necaxa's Cristian Montecinos, the last thing Manchester United needed was to have a man sent off. But that was exactly what happened when David Beckham was shown a red card for a nasty knee-high challenge on Jose Milian in the 43rd minute. Early in the second half Necaxa missed a chance to extend their lead when Alex Aguinaga had a weak penalty easily saved by Mark Bosnich.

Later on in the half, however, it was the English team who were on the receiving end when Dwight Yorke's penalty was saved by Mexican veteran Hugo Pineda. Minutes later, Yorke had the last laugh when a cross from substitute Ole Gunnar Solsksjaer found him at the far post and he tapped the ball in to make the equalizer.

Necaxa, in truth, outplayed United and were perhaps unlucky to lose. Manchester united will next face Vasco - without Beckham.
