Manchester United, fielding a reserve team, beat South Melbourne 2-0 in the World Club Championship on Tuesday but it was a meaningless win, with both teams out of contention for the title. Quinton Fortune scored in the eighth and 20th minutes, after which United eased up on another stifling evening before briefly looking interested again in the last few minutes. The Australians nearly scored when Vaughan Coveny hit both posts before the ball bounced to safety in the second half. David Beckham, sent off in United's opening game, came on as a substitute for the last 15 minutes and was booed resoundingly every time he touched the ball. United finished group B with four points from three games and were left with a chance of making the third place play-off. For this, they needed Vasco da Gama to beat Mexico's Necaxa by a three-goal margin or more. South Melbourne went home without a point.
