Arsenal Football Away Programme Collectors Handbook 1946-1987

Since the Arsenal Collectors Handbook for home programmes was published in 1983, an away handbook was needed to fill the gap for collectors of Arsenal programmes. With this in mind, I have now written the away booklet on similar lines, but this time I have simplified the listing of each season by separating the first team programmes from the reserve team, also listing again all European cup matches with more details on type of programme issued.

I have decided not to include all other reserve league and cup programmes due to the time involved and lack of space in this publication. All programmes have been listed season by season, in date order with fixture details and results; Arsenal's score is shown first. There is also a column to mark in personal collection details. I have listed as much information as possible within the scope of this booklet and have included all first team league, cup and friendly programmes in one section, followed by reserve team friendly, youth cup, five and six a side programmes. Programmes have been issued for al l Arsenals' league and cup matches in England. There have been some very interesting and unusual programmes over the years. Since 1946 there have been just three single sheet issue league, which are 46-47 at Stoke City, 50-51 at Blackpool and 53-54 at Preston North End, Over the last few season matches have been played on Sunday and as well as programmes being issued at three of these matches at Tottenham single sheet programmes were issued. Other programmes to look out for are the issues where matches have been postponed, as some of these programmes are now difficult to get, especially 46-47 at Derby County on February 5 is very rare.

Most of the early post-war programmes are now getting very difficult to find for collections' collection. Programmes from matches at Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Grimsby Town, Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United and Stoke City are extremely rare. Since the mid 70's when for some matches not enough programmes were printed and due to sell outs, collectors again will find it difficult to get a few odd programmes up to this season, such as 84-85 at Chelsea and 84-85 at Sunderland.

Two of the most sought after cup programmes are from matches in 50-51 at Carlisle United who were in the Third Division North at the time and 55-56 at Bedford Town from the Southern League. With the exception of early post-war years it should still be possible to build up a relatively complete collection, as with a big club such as Arsenal there are still plenty of programmes.

It is of cause difficult to list all friendly matches as so many have been played over the years and to know exactly which club did not issue a programme for a particular match. I would appreciate any help and information, which could be of use to me and other collectors for inclusion in any future publication
